BOOK REVIEW : OVERCOMING PERFECTIONISM by ROZ SHAFRAN, SARAH EGAN, TRACEY WADE

REVIEW IN ENGLISH & BAHASA INDONESIA

I’m not aware that I’m a perfectionist until I’ve read this book. This one is one of my best buys in 2023. One of the best books I’ve read (and also the longest book I could finish). Anyone who is a perfectionist should read this book.

  1. About the book

The book is a self-help guide for perfectionists. The purpose is to help you overcome your perfectionism trait using cognitive-behavioral techniques, one of which you may be familiar with. The book isn’t something easy to read. You can’t just read the book; you’re supposed to ‘work’ on this type of book. You can ‘work’ the book by yourself or accompanied by your therapist. It’s your choice. The book is divided into two parts: understanding perfectionism and overcoming perfectionism. In Part 1, you’ll get an explanation of why, as a perfectionist, you do some things in particular (such as procrastination, avoidance, all-or-nothing thinking, list-making, etc.). Whether you’re aware of all of those things or not, you’ll admit that you do that too. When I’ve read about procrastination and avoiding tasks, it feels like I’ve got a slap right in the face since I do exactly that. The second part is the one you’ll need after you’ve understood the cause of perfectionism and how to treat it. You may not know how perfectionism causes you many problems in your life because you have lived with it for a long time. So, the second part of this book is the difficult one. You think you have an intention to ‘change’ and try to ‘cure’ your perfectionism, but that’s not enough. As a perfectionist, you just want everything to be ‘perfect’. Reading and working on this book gives you an amount of pressure that you think you can handle, but it’ll need your extra effort. When you read this book, just keep going.

  1. Who should read this book?

Obviously, this book should be read by perfectionists who want to overcome their traits. Often, they’re not aware of their traits. Also, disadvantages of the trait that cost them a good quality of life.

  1. When should you read this book?

You should start to read it now. This book takes a lot of time and effort to read and practice. And for perfectionists, it takes dedication to keep reading and ‘working’ on this book.

  1. What I’ve got after reading this book

At first, I may be in denial that I’m a perfectionist. I think that maybe, yeah, I’m not that perfectionist. Then I realized the book just kept spilling facts about me. How can I relate to it so much? I like to procrastinate until deadlines come, avoid doing tasks, have all-or-nothing thinking about anything, self-criticize, discount any achievement, etc. I may become someone who doesn’t know how to be grateful, enjoy things, or feel unworthy just because I’m a perfectionist. And I just know it from the book. All of the techniques and steps in this book help me so much, as long as I keep doing them. I need four months to read this book until it’s done (yeah, I did procrastinate, so it took longer to finish the book). And I need more time to really work on this book and to learn techniques that help me. It isn’t like flipping hands; I need extra effort to overcome my perfectionism. But I can assure you that reading and working on this book will give you a lot of benefits for dealing with your perfectionism. Now, when my perfectionism takes control, I know how to deal with it and am still practicing to get used to it.

  1. (+) and (-) of this book*

  1. Worth buying and reading or not

If you’re the target reader of the book, this one should be on your shelf. If it’s important for you to overcome your perfectionism, you should read it. Also, don’t forget to prepare a notebook you can bring anywhere to do the worksheets. You may think you don’t need a reminder, but you do. Because I do too. So, it’s definitely worth buying and reading.

Poin (-)

โœ“Saya belum menemukan poin (-) dari buku ini.

6. Worth to buy and read or not

Cloudy sky and rain

What makes you feel nostalgic?

I don’t know why, but I like it when the sky is turning gray and water starts to pour down to the ground. The view, the smell, the sound. Everything seems decent to remember. Why is this making me feel nostalgic? Am I having personal experience with this? Maybe, maybe not.

I remember when I was a child, my mother told me not to play outside when it’s raining. In our old house at that time, there were pink and orange bougenville flowers in the corner of our front porch. It’s a pretty big plant, and it has a lot of flowers. My mother took care of it a lot. It was blooming and wet since it was raining outside. I love to see the water dropping from each flower. They look beautiful, even though the color is kind of mixed with the illusion of rain. I’ve picked up one of the petals and put it in my palm. I’ve looked at it, just looking at it and feeling it in my hand, then throwing it away. I can’t believe that I still remember my feelings that day. The memories that I brought from my childhood. I may not have listened to my mother that day, but that was one of my memories of why I like rain and a cloudy sky. I was playing around even though I didn’t play in the rain.

I remember when the rain was pouring hard and the electricity went off. We’ve gathered in the living room, and my mother is lighting up the candles. We’ve snuggled in a blanket, playing shadows of ourselves. I was giggling, trying to guess what the shadow was. Was it a bird, a bat, or a cat? That was a beautiful memory that I remembered until now. We were so happy. We didn’t worry about how an Instagram post doesn’t get any likes or TikTok doesn’t get any followers. Back then, being mindful was so much easier for me. That’s the reason why my mind connected the rain with the shadow on the back of the plywood. The light was limited, but our feelings were full. The laugh, the smile, the moment.

There are so many more stories related to the rain; should I tell more stories about it?

Learning from a broken boiler

boiler

Before I start to write the story, I’ve got the story from a book with title : 59 Seconds by Richard Wiseman. I have my own interpretation of the story, maybe other people have another interpretation (I don’t know). The story has a really good value.

One day, there is a man who has a broken boiler. He is tried to fix it, but he always failed. Eventually, he gives in and decides to call in an expret repairman. The engineer arrives, gives one gentle tap on the side of the boiler and it works. The boiler is ready to be used again. Later, the engineer gives bill to the man. The man argues that he should only pay a small fee as the job only took the engineer a few moments. The engineer explains that the man is not paying for the time he took to tap the boiler, but rather the years of experience involved in knowing you exactly where to tap.

For me, the point of the story is you can actually ‘tap in the right spot’ if you’re making efforts learning about something. Nowadays, it’s easier to get information from any source online. There is no excuse to say ‘I don’t have any privileges to know about something’. If you want you can learn about anything (even) for free right now. So, maybe you are not becoming an expert in a very short time. But, you can help yourself (or other people) if you know how to solves some problem if you are willing to learn about it.

I have some dreams since I was a kid. One of them is to be a writer. I love to read and write since I was in kindergarten. But, growing up I don’t have courage to share my writings to anyone. Now, I write everyday. Yes, I am not a writer but I learn to write. I write everyday. I always have belief that maybe one people out there who reads my post is feel connected with my writings somehow.

So, I keep learning. Learning to write better. To tell story better.

Today’s Recipe : Steamed Bread Pudding

steamed bread pudding

The easiest way to use my leftover white bread (right pic) is this recipe. It’s easy, tasty, not too sweet and perfect for dessert. In my country Indonesia, we don’t usually eat breakfast with something sweet. So, before I eat something like this, I had to go eat something savory first ๐Ÿ˜. Usually, we eat rice with something either protein or fat. Then, go grab some dessert. I don’t eat something sweet in a large portion for just one sitting, so I could eat it twice for just one cup. Okay, that’s not an important information though. But, the important point is the mixture of bread, milk, coconut milk and vanilla are great. Okay, maybe I exaggerating but I think you should make it. This it the perfect dessert if you are too lazy to make a dessert.

Here’s the recipe that I’ve got from my sister, but I modified a little bit.

INGREDIENTS :

8 slices of white bread
1 pcs egg (medium size)
5 tbsp cornstarch
6 tablespoons granulated sugar (can be reduced if you don’t want it too sweet)
350 ml coconut milk
200 ml milk
1 tsp vanilla essence
2 tbsp butter (melted)
pinch of salt

Toppings (optional):
Chocolate chips
Chocolate powder

HOW TO MAKE :
1. Mix all ingredients except white bread
2. Prepare a ramekin or other cup, shred or cut white bread then pour in the ingredients that have been mixed previously. Adjust to your taste, how many spoons per cup.
3. Top with chocolate chips and chocolate powder.
4. Steam for about 20 minutes until cooked.
5. Remove the bread pudding from the steamer, cool it in room temperature. It can be served while still warm or cold after put it in the fridge.

NOTES:
1. Vanilla essence can be replaced with vanilla paste or vanilla powder
2. The cup is preferably made of glass or aluminum, it’s safer to use in a steamer
3. The amount of sugar and salt can be adjusted according to your taste
4. Toppings is optional

For me, the best way to serve this pudding is cold taken from fridge. I already posted the video in my Youtube channel and other platforms. You should check it here :

Today’s Recipe : Banana Choco Muffin

This choco banana muffin (left pic) is very simple dessert I can make with just few steps. I think I love muffin more than I ever realize. Because, I often made this when I had some ripe bananas. I’m not an expert baker at all, but making this muffin feels like I’m not amateur ๐Ÿ˜‚. I think everyone could make it since this is the easiest dessert you can make (maybe). It has a moist texture that makes you wants to eat one more. Not too sweet, or less sweet than general muffin. The sweetness mostly coming from sugar (obviously), but if you don’t want to reduce the sugar I think it’s okay. You can make the muffin according to your taste.

Here’s the recipe that I’ve got from one of my cook book in the kitchen. I modified some steps, but I’ll write the original recipe too.

INGREDIENTS :

*Ingredients A*

4 pcs ripe bananas
1 large egg
110 grams of granulated sugar
85 grams of cooking oil
1 tsp vanilla essence

*Ingredients B*

150 grams of low protein wheat flour
30 grams of cocoa powder
3/4 tsp double acting baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp vanilla essence

*Toppings*

Chocolate chips

HOW TO COOK :

1. Stir all Ingredients A with a whisk until mixed. Set aside.
2. In another bowl, mix all Ingredients B as well. Make a circle in the middle. Pour in the mixture from Ingredient A while stirring with a whisk, just a while until it mixed well. Just leave it alone if there are still lumps in the dough. Don’t overmix.
3. Pour the mixture into a cup/muffin pan that has been smeared with margarine. Put topping on top for decoration. Bake in a preheated oven at 180ยฐC on lower heat until cooked (depending on each oven, mine is 20-25 minutes), then at the same temperature on upper heat for just 5 minutes. Leave it at room temperature before served.

Mostly, I didn’t put it in the fridge because I like it moist in room temperature. I often eat it for breakfast or whenever I want some dessert. So, do you like muffin too?Could you show me your best muffin recipe? Please let me know ๐Ÿ™‚

Writing is my sweet escape and also a safe place to stay

I am an overthinker. My mind often wandering think about anything. I even thought if I had OCD or not since I kept ruminating some things in my mind. Also I can not let go of something’s that doesn’t match with me. I kept trying to shut my mind. Well, the more I was trying the more I keep thinking a lot. That’s when I was realize, I am an adult, I didn’t remember some things that brings me joy then when I was still a child. It turns out one of my fun thing to do other than read was writing. The little me in the past often wrote in a paper or book.

I used to love writing so much. I remember that I had some poem book since I was still in elementary school. I threw away since I was too ashamed someone will found out about what I wrote. Yes, I was a child who doesn’t had much of self-esteem. And never proud of myself, what I’m capable of. Not self-loathing, just not confident enough to feel worthy. How sad, when I was flashback reminiscing my childhood. I knew that my poem was just random, doesn’t have a rhymes too (maybe) but I just love to wrote that. The feeling when I was writing was pleasant, but why I didn’t do it again? I guess I was ‘too busy’ to revisit one of my safe place to pour my mind, to write about anything, to express everything that I keep in my head.

Now, in my thirties, I write again. I need many years before until I have a courage to share my writings in many platform now. I pour my mind into writings (almost) everyday now. Actually, I don’t know if someone read it or not. Nowadays, everyone writes, then what’s differentiate mine from them? why someone wants to sacrifice their time to read mine? Yeah, I keep wondering about that questions everyday, but I keep writing anyway.

What do you enjoy most about writing?

So, now I can admit that what I enjoy the most about writing is I can write about anything I want. About things that I love to do, things that I’m passionate about or daily WordPress writing blog like this. I enjoy writing just for the sake of a writing, and obviously when I had some feedbacks it makes me so excited too.

For me, sharing what I write is for sharing experiences, thoughts, critics, or another things. It is my sweet escape from my overload thinking, my safe place to share many pieces from my mind.

Morning walk

Describe one habit that brings you joy.

One of my favorite habit is walking around the neighborhood in the morning. The sunlight is warm, the wind is slowly breeze and the street is quiet. Luckily, my neighbors aren’t morning person so I have my morning walk session calmly. I’m not antisocial, I just an introvert who need my alone time to recharge my energy and social battery. Here in my neighborhood, small talk is part of manners when meeting up with neighbor. That’s why walking in the morning is different than in the afternoon which some people are going out for walk too.

Sometimes, I walk alone or I bring my cat with me (as long as she’s quiet too ๐Ÿ˜‚). I love the clear sky as I can picture it with anything in my mind. I love the wind and the smell of the fresh air. I love the sunlight, I can feel it in my skin. I love the trees and wild grass, they’re green. I love everything surround me when I walk in the morning, it energizes me to starting day.

Write about a random act of kindness you’ve done for someone.

Actually the story isn’t about someone but an animal. I don’t remember when. But it took place in a hospital. My husband was sick, I was sat in front of administration table. I remember there are many people waiting. I saw someone enter the room and close the door. He didn’t know there was a cat behind him. The cat squeezed between the door. There are no movement from anyone seeing the poor kitty. Then I just came over to open the door and he runs away. I hope that poor kitty was fine.
